LOUIS - A female pimp reduced her business to its basics recently in talking to a documentary video crew. Prostitutes have to eat, she explained. A stripper was similarly matter-of-fact: "I need the money," she said. "I like to dance and I like the attention." And young gang members displayed their arsenals with an explanation of a kill-or-be-killed mentality that rules their violent- and often short - lives.
